The Hollister family is pleased to announce contributions from the Reid Hollister Memorial Fund and the proceeds from the sale of Not So Fast: Parenting your Teen Through the Dangers of Driving. As described on this blog and the Not So Fast website, www.nsfteendriving.com, Reid’s Fund supports infant and toddler education in greater Hartford, Connecticut. We are please today to announce a contribution of $1,500 to the “Books to Home “ program of the Women’s League Child Development Center on Main Street in Hartford, and $100 to Kids and Cars, which advocates for legislation and programs to stop deaths and injuries when drivers fail to see infants and toddlers who are behind or near cars, and when kids are locked in overheated cars.
The Women’s League is the oldest day care center in the United States — more than a century in operation. My wife Ellen and I took a tour with Executive Director Iris Hope Rich in early January, and we found a bright, cheerful facility brimming with happy kids and dedicated teachers. “Books to Home “ provides funds to allow children to buy and take home from Women’s League books that they have enjoyed in school. The program is a wonderful example of exactly the type of reading to young children that was one of Reid’s delights when he worked with kindergartens and first graders at the Sprit Hill Sunday School program at Asylum Hill Congregational Church.
Kids and Cars, www.KidsandCars.org, operates under the able leadership of its President and Founder Janette Fennell. She and her group have brought a national spotlight to the gut-wrenching problems of little kids being invisible to drivers, and the horrific consequences of back over events and kids left in overheated cars. We are pleased to support their program.
We will have more uses for the income of Reid’s Fund and the proceeds of Not So Fast to announce in the months ahead, but for now we are pleased to be able to let our readers know about these contributions.
