I am at the Governors Highway Safety Association Annual Meeting in Michigan.  Today I heard a presentation about reminding all drivers of the importance of giving room to law enforcement and first responders when they are engaged in their public safety duties on our highways and roads.

Everyone needs to pull into an opposite lane or squeeze as far away as possible. More and more states are passing laws making this mandatory.  Being hit by passing traffic is the fourth leading cause of death of police officers.

This is something that I doubt is often taught to teen drivers.  Many parents are unaware of the importance of giving room to public safety officials.  We all need a reminder, but parents should be sure to remind their teens about this important obligation.
