We read your article "Sometimes There Aren't Enough Candles" in the Hartford Courant. It holds so many thoughts that match our feelings. We, too, lost our 29-year old son, Brett, in a car crash in 2006. He was a loving son, husband, teacher, brother and friend to all. We are so sorry for your loss. Because of our own loss we have felt the grief of the Newtown families so very deeply. We have attended The Compassionate Friends meetings and candlelighting vigils in Northford and now in Norwich for years. This year we attended a nearby informal candlelight vigil a couple hosted in Old Saybrook.
Our small town of Clinton opened its arms and hearts to us in the time after Brett's death. They even closed the high school, where he taught, the day of his funeral. As time has gone by, although it remains fresh in our hearts, we are more alone in our grief. Thank you for your poignant words and suggestions for those wishing to comfort parents like us.
We look forward to reading your book when it is published.

the kids don't know that if you hit your thumb with a hammer hard enough, you'll go to the emergency room. Or that the fall off a three story building will have the same results as the pumpkin dropped, landing at 28mph. Or that the mouse in the tincan, thrown against the wall will impact at the same speed as the can. I try to demonstrate the analogous circumstances . . . And the behavioral errors of cause. Without error, there is no need for excuses or sorrow.

Are you familiar with Phil Berardelli or Ronn Langford? Each has gone on to enact preventive efforts after their kid's tragedy.

And to the person who reminded us that teen driving laws don’t curtail liberty but recognize that the teen brain is not fully mature, I say “Exactly.” -- we cannot learn responsibility for our children, they need to be placed in situations where they learn it for themselves. Same thing for adults, how would you like your boss constantly looking over your shoulder because they didn't think you had the capability to fully grasp your job?

GPS can be more useful in the hands of parents. If a teen is lost or in a wreck, some GPS trackers will send real-time notifications.

I've had the GPS tell me to turn the wrong way on a one way more than once. If I hadn't been looking and seeing the signs I would have hit someone. You can't count on the technology to work without fault!

Another thing to consider is that not every parent is a great driver or a great teacher. What if you are teaching your child the wrong behaviors on the road because that's the way you do things? And even if you are a great driver, if you don't know how to pass that knowledge along to your teen driver you still aren't going them any favors.

The truth is that most accidents are preventable, but we have to remember to take the extra few seconds and be aware of what is going on around us. Young drivers aren't as used to driving as adults, so sometimes they forget everything that needs to be done before pulling out of the driveway. Adults could use a little reminder sometimes too.

Tim,

I am so sorry for your loss. I am a Law Enforcement Officer in Ohio. I have recently invented and launched a new product that may interest you. My only motivation to create what i did was to prevent any parent to have to go through what you did and still are. Please visit my website to learn more about it. I would love to hear from you.

God Bless you!!!

I together with my buddies were reading through the good tips located on the blog while before long I got an awful suspicion I had not expressed respect to the web site owner for those techniques. These young men were definitely for that reason joyful to study them and already have in fact been tapping into them. Many thanks for actually being indeed kind and then for using this kind of very good subject areas millions of individuals are really eager to be aware of. My honest apologies for not expressing appreciation to you sooner.
